de Jonge Dikkert windmill/restaurant, Amstelveen
In the fall of 2015 my husband and I lived in the Netherlands. We spent a long weekend wandering around in North Holland, driving from one quaint village to another. Of course we encountered LOTS of windmills along the way- both old and new!
 the miller's house  | In Amstelveen (a suburb of Amsterdam) we met some very nice Dutch people who live in a house that's attached to an ancient windmill (built in 1672!). The windmill was in their family for many years. The family sold it, and now the windmill is a nice restaurant called De Jonge Dikkert. The family kept the attached miller's house, which is where these good people live. I went to visit them because one of my Pennsylvania friends is related to them. A fun assignment, "find the family's windmill and take pictures." |
I told my students about our windmill adventures in North Holland, and invited them to create their own windmill masterpieces. Here are their colorful creations:

For my friend, I bought a mini windmill- similar to the Amstelveen windmill that she sent me in search of. Some of my students drew and painted the souvenir windmill. Beautiful!
