Madagascar is an island country in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of Southeast Africa. This amazing place is a biodiversity hotspot- over 90% of its wildlife can be found nowhere else on earth! Blue Church Art students learned about some of Madagascar's unique creatures and were inspired to create these beautiful artworks. |
The Radiated Tortoise is one of the most beautiful tortoises on the planet. It is native to Madagascar, and is now an endangered species. The oldest recorded Radiated Tortoise, named Adwaita, lived to be 255 years old! A British Major General in India named Robert Clive kept him as a pet on his estate in India. After Clive's death in 1774 Adwaita was given to the Alipore zoo, where he lived until his death in March 2006. |
Pre-K through grade 3 students created these beauties: | Madagascar is home to about half of the world's 185 known species of chameleons. Many of them exist nowhere outside of Madagascar! They change color based on temperature, light intensity, and mood. Chameleons come in a fantastic variety of sizes, shapes and colors. The students at Blue Church Art had fun drawing and painting their own chameleons. |
