Delft Blue Tiles

Windmills, tulips, and wooden shoes are all iconic symbols of the Netherlands. Another is the blue and white glazed ceramic ware that has been a popular Dutch souvenir for centuries.

PictureDelftware
In the 17th century imported blue and white Chinese porcelain was much in demand in Europe. It was very expensive, so some enterprising Dutch potters began to manufacture more affordable blue and white earthenware that imitated the costly Chinese porcelain. The best imitations were made in the town of Delft, so that name became associated with the craft.
Blue Delftware became world famous.

A popular Delftware item was the square tile, decorated with scenes from everyday Dutch life: flowers, animals, birds, insects, houses, landscapes, ships, and people. The tiles were used to decorate walls, stairwells, and fireplace surrounds. Blue and white Delft-style tiles are still popular for home decoration today.

The students at Blue Church Art created their own versions of Delft tiles. Their 5" square "tiles" were drawn and shaded in colored pencil with chalk pastel backgrounds.

Most followed the traditional Delftware blue and white color scheme, but some students added a bit of color- or a lot of color, like the beautiful tile at the right.

This student's beautiful "tall ship" was
too tall for the 5" square!

The students have created so many wonderful Blue Delftware tiles at Blue Church Art! I wish I could make all of them into real earthenware tiles and decorate my house with them :-)

Sarah, an adult student, created her pink tulip masterpiece with colored pencil.

Today is the first day of Spring…

We have endured a hard winter here in southeast Pennsylvania. Spring is officially here, but Mother Nature seems to have forgotten! Snow and ice still lingers in the shady corners of our yards, and it's COLD outside! But my students are thinking of Spring, drawing and painting tulips!

I brought pretty yellow and pink silk tulips to the classroom for my students to draw, and placed them in blue bottles. Some of the students used colored pencils and chalk pastel to create these beauties:

The younger students, grades pre-K to 3, drew outdoor tulips. Sunshine, bees, ladybugs, blue skies, and butterflies add to the charm of their colorful paintings. They used crayons, markers, and watercolor to make their beautiful tulip scenes.

Jacob Marrel Tulips

PicturePages from a Marrel Tulpenboek

I showed my older students pictures of unusual tulip paintings made by an a German artist named Jacob Marrel. He painted during the Netherlands' Golden Age (the 1600s).

PictureJacob Marrel self-portrait
Jacob Marrel was born in Germany, but he lived in the Netherlands for many years. He became famous for his still life paintings. He was also a well-known tulip bulb dealer, and he created several albums of his tulip paintings, called Tulpenboeks. These books are art museum treasures today. The students were inspired by Marrel's tulip art to create their own beautiful drawings of tulips.

My friend Bernadette keeps an "art journal." In it she tries to draw from her imagination every day. I was looking through her wonderful little book of drawings and found a page where she expressed her thoughts about the tulips she had seen that day.

What a perfect description!

For St. Patrick's Day there were lots of Leprechauns in the art classroom! Five students drew rainbows and the leprechaun's pot of gold.

Some very rare green peacocks showed up at Blue Church Art for the St. Patrick's Day holiday, too :-)
