Kindergarten and First grade students with their Rainbow Fish
PictureMermaid by Lauren D.

Sebastian, the charming little crab who was Ariel's sidekick in Disney's Little Mermaid movie, sang "Under the Sea" to try to keep the mermaid Ariel from following her curiosity and visiting the dangerous world above. This is one of my all-time favorite songs, and I can't think of better words to accompany this blog post:

Just look at the world around you
Right here on the ocean floor
Such wonderful things surround you
What more is you lookin' for?

One of the students brought his grandmother to class! She was visiting from Massachusetts. Luke's grand mom drew an awesome Pacific Sea Nettle! His mom, Kristen, is a student in my adult art class. She drew a beautiful jellyfish, too.

Adult students and one 4th grader drew "zentangle" fish with ink. Zentangle is a relaxing method of drawing, using repeated patterns. These artists used lots of color in their masterpieces:

Older students (grades 4 and up) used graphite powder and charcoal pencil to create fantastic undersea creatures. Deep sea sparkle was added with metallic silver gouache. Gouache (pronounced "gwash") is an opaque watercolor.

Up on the shore they work all day
Out in the sun they slave away
While we devoting full time to floating

Quite a few octopuses inhabit this watery Blue Church Art blog post. Or are they octopi? Both those plural forms of octopus are correct (although some experts reject octopi.) Another plural form of octopus is octopodes, a less used word. However you say it, there are a whole lot of these fascinating creatures here, enough for an…

Dutch Canal Houses

Amsterdam's 17th century canal houses
PictureStep gable
Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands. It’s famous for its canals (called grachten in Dutch). There are 165 grachten in Amsterdam with a combined length of 60+ miles! The canals were built in the early 17th century to be used for water management, transportation, and defense. The magnificent canal houses that border the canals were also built mostly in the 17th century, during the Netherland’s “Golden age.” The side-by-side houses were built on narrow, deep lots, so the only way to make each house different was to decorate the front with a distinctive gable. There are various gable styles, including bell gables, triangular gables, neck gables, and step gables.

Some of the students at Blue Church Art drew their own colorful versions of Amsterdam's famous canal houses. Check them out:
