Red foxes are abundant in the Blue Church neighborhood. We often see them trotting across open fields, in search of food. These beautiful creatures like to live alone- except in the mating season, or when raising their young (which are called kits).
A group of foxes is called a "skulk." The students at Blue Church Art created this wonderful skulk of foxes in January and February.

Foxes will sleep in the open, even in cold snowy weather. Instead of sleeping in a den, an adult fox usually curls up with its fluffy tail over its nose and feet to protect itself from the cold.

Foxes are more closely related to dogs than cats, but in some ways they are more cat-like. One major similarity to cats is in the fox's eye. Like cats, in bright light a fox's pupils form thin vertical slits.

A fox's coat color and texture may vary due to the change in seasons; fox pelts are richer and denser in the colder months and lighter in the warmer months.

One student drew an Arctic Fox. Arctic foxes change the color of their fur with the seasons. In winter they are white to blend in with the snow, while in the summer they change to brown!
Two students drew foxes with an abstract twist- one of them is green...and pixelated!

At one time red foxes were trapped extensively for their soft, colorful fur. Since people have become more aware of the fur trade, there is no longer as much demand for fox skins. Red fox numbers are increasing and their territory is also expanding. This is good news for red foxes in North America.
