Grade 6-12 students show their masterpieces!
I’m living in northeastern Pennsylvania for the summer, in beautiful lake country. We have a great little library here. It’s a social center for this rural community, and during the summer the library offers lots of fun activities for the local kids. This year I volunteered to teach three days of art lessons for the summer program. We had a good time, and the kids created some amazing artwork.

After the ice cream cone class we all ate REAL ice cream cones, thanks to a very nice lady named Monica who babysits for one of the kids.

The grade 3-5 class created lupine (wildflower) paintings, toucans, and a still life painting of oranges on a colorful tablecloth.

They also drew Rhode Island Red chickens using colored pencils and chalk pastels. Three of the boys in the class brought their own pet chickens to the library for us to admire before we drew the chickens. That was a treat!!

Logan’s Cinnamon Queen chicken, named County, entertained us by clucking and jumping out of her carrier when the other chickens showed up. We think she was jealous!
On the last day of class Ben and Richie gave me a dozen fresh eggs laid by their chickens. What a nice gift!

PictureDawn, the Librarian, loves the artwork!
The art lessons were a big success. We had a good time, and the kids produced many beautiful works of art. Each student selected one of their masterpieces to display in the library for the remainder of the summer.

Rosie, my young neighbor from the other end of our lake, was disappointed that she  couldn’t make it to the art lessons at the library this year- so I invited her and her mom, Meredith, to my house for a “private” lesson instead! I showed them how to paint a watercolor pear. They were very pleased with their deliciously beautiful pears!
