On September 6, 1620 the Mayflower set sail from Southampton, England. 130 passengers were aboard, including the crew of about 30 persons. After a miserable voyage, with the ship being battered with huge waves, the crew sighted land (present day Cape Cod) on November 9th.  After a month and a half of exploring the coast, the passengers decided to build their settlement in what is present day Plymouth. But the harsh winter weather forced them to stay on the Mayflower until March. During their first winter in America, more than half of the Plymouth colonists died from malnutrition, disease and exposure to the harsh New England weather. In fact, without the help of the area’s native people, it is likely that none of the colonists would have survived. The local Wampanoag people taught them how to hunt local animals, gather shellfish and grow corn, beans and squash. The colonists celebrated their first harvest with a three day festival of thanksgiving, inviting the natives who had made their survival in the new world possible.

The flags that flew above the Mayflower were the British flag (the Union Jack) and St. George's Cross.

No one knows for sure if the Pilgrims ate turkey at their first Thanksgiving feast, but Blue Church Art is serving up some beautiful turkeys for Thanksgiving 2016:
